Sammanfattning

The importance of a supportive environment for good health and well-being is highly recognized worldwide. This can be seen as an increase of implemented evidence based facts from health-care architecture and design in caring-programs, national guidelines and standards in order to improve the quality of care. A large number of research papers have been presented over the years from the sectors of care, architecture and design related to the environment's content and design, and centers are established where research and education within health care and architecture has a strong focus. Examples of this knowledge is the importance of an accessible and easy-to-interpret health-care environment that promotes function and safety for the patients, as well as the significance of a health-care environment that give the opportunity for privacy, and an esthetical environment indicating respect and dignity for its visitors, the patients. In order to establish evidence based health care environments, a dialogue has to be established about how new knowledge can be implemented into practice. This requires an interaction between care, architecture, design and culture based on a common belief that this kind of cooperation promotes health and well-being. This article discusses how factors in the environment can have an impact on each other and therefore must be seen in its context.
