De kommer som sykepleiere, ikke som studenter
Sammanfattning
Background: A new practical training course for nursing homes has
been developed for 6th term students at UiT Narvik. The students
are expected to function as professional managers, participate in
quality control routines, and supervise students and fellow workers.
Objective:
The article highlights some of the experiences of the
practical training supervisors during their supervision of the final
year nursing students.
Method: The study followed a qualitative design where focus
groups were used for data collection. Two focus groups were used
with participants from five different nursing homes. Data were
analysed according to Granheim and Lundhamns content analysis.
Results: The study finds that the practical training supervisor
experiences increasing demands as a professional manager. The
new practice model challenged supervisors to delegate greater
responsibility to students than they were used to. The practical
training supervisors came to view the students as nurses-in-training
rather than students.
Conclusion: The introduction of a new practical training model
may contribute towards a change in perceptions about nursing
homes among students and promote nursing homes as an interesting
future workplaces. The curriculum’s focus on professional
management may furthermore lessen insecurities among newly
appointed nursing staff at these institutions such that they are
better equipped to cope with this great responsibility as recently
graduated nurses.
