Sammanfattning

Social work provided by the Swedish City Missions has undergone two general changes in recent years, it has expanded and broadened and it has come to concern more serious social problems. The work of the city missions can no longer be considered complementary to the public sector since their services do not always complement any existing public services and since they provide services on commission from the local authories. This article describes a situation where organizations like the city missions are taking more responsibility for the health and well-being of poor people in Sweden. The concluding discussion concerns the consequences of this development on both a societal and individual level. The article is based on an empirical study of eight city missions in Sweden.
