Sammanfattning
Porcelains are the dental materials with the highest potential to aesthetically mimic the natural tooth substance. Through layering technique, it is possible to control the optical properties such as translucency, opalescence and fluorescence of a restoration. However, due to the high proportion of glass, the strength is reduced, thus limiting the indications.
Glass ceramics have a higher strength and fracture toughness - two important material properties - but similar optical properties as porcelain and can therefore be used either monolithically (with one and the same material through the entire restoration) characterized by staining technique or in combination with porcelain to further enhance the aesthetic appearance of the restoration (so called cut back technique).
The indications of porcelain and glass ceramics are for instance dependent of the properties of the materials such as flexural strength, fracture toughness and optical properties. The manufacturing technique, whether the restoration is monolithically designed or veneered with porcelain and the handling of the material affect the strength of the final restoration, which is also dependent of the choice of cement, cementation technique and access to peripheral enamel.
