Activity is a key concept in recovery. This literature review examines how activity is experienced and how this affects recovery from mental disorders and/or substance abuse. The literature review is based on 42 selected articles using the SALSA framework for literature review. Articles have been obtained through systematic database searches and have been assessed and structured in a synthesis. Thematization resulted in four themes: (1) Activity leads to recovery; (2) Activity leads to the experience of presence, coping, and well-being; (3) Being active is an arena for citizenship and socialization; and (4) Being active promotes identity through action.
