Sammanfattning

Torture survivors rarely tell nurses or other health care staff about their traumatic background. It is therefore important for nurses to be trained in the rehabilitation of torture survivors. Since 1992, the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) in Copenhagen has been teaching nursing educators about families hit by torture with the purpose of having them incorporate the teaching in the training of nurses. The RCT evaluated its teaching in 2002 and concluded that the nursing educators generally have embraced the teaching and incorporated it into their curriculum. The evaluation also revealed that a little more than half the nurses trained between 1992-2002 had received training related to torture survivors. It is difficult to establish whether the teaching has had any noticeable effect. It is evident, however, that nurses who were taught are less liable to reject having encountered torture survivors than those who had not.
