Sammanfattning
Patients (n=366) with long-term indwelling catheter, residing at 78 nursing homes were followed for one year, and catheter changes and rinses (catheter events), scheduled as well as acute, registered in an observation study. There was great inter-individual variation in the incidence of acute catheter events, from 0.08 per month in 25 percent of the patients to 1.54 in the 10 percent with the most problems. There was no correlation with catheter material (hydrogel coated latex or silicone and 100 percent silicone catheters). Patients who had had catheter for over two years showed, surprisingly, a significantly lower incidence of unscheduled catheter changes and rinses than patients with catheters for less than 2 years.
