Sammanfattning

In 2016 a temporary law was implemented in Sweden, implicating a switch from permanent to temporary residence permits. In other countries that apply temporary protection, studies have shown a worse mental health outcome than if granted permanent residency. The aim of this survey based study was to analyze if residence status had an impact on the mental health of newly arrived refugees in Sweden. Four out of ten newly arrived refugees had impaired mental wellbeing. The proportion was higher among temporary than permanent residence permit holders. An association between temporary residence permits and impaired mental wellbeing remained after controlling for other factors. The results imply that a re-establishment of permanent residence permits would benefit mental health of newly arrived refugees.
